Honey is a Staffordshire Terrier mix that came to AAS in 2006, I
believe. She was adopted out in that time frame. Great dog.
2012-03-03; Military
Here is a photo of the USS Arleigh Burke, a Burke-class destroyer
from the US Navy, taken at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. Along
with its effectiveness, the Burke-class destroyers are visually
interesting. The superstructure and fittings topside are pretty
clean and minimal compared to older destroyer designs. Here is some
naval tradition for you. The flag at the stern of the ship is the
national ensign, i.e. the ol' Stars and Stripes. The flag at the bow
is the Union Jack, which for the US Navy is a flag which consists of
the canton of the national ensign; i.e. a blue flag with 50 stars.
These two flags are flown thusly by USN ships while not under way.
Notice that there is not a single seagull or other aquatic bird in
the sky, or elsewhere in the shot, with the possible exception of
the small white spot in the water in the center of the pic. Pure
luck, as there were hundreds in the parking lot.

The above aircraft is a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter
plane, painted in Vietnam-era colors. The picture was taken at the
2008 Air Power Over Hampton Roads airshow.

Checkers
Checkers is another AAS dog that I fostered for a short while. He
was adopted soon thereafter by a family that just adores him.
Checkers is a great example of the wonderful dogs that are available
at dog shelters. Smart, obedient, affectionate, playful, great with
people, well-behaved around other dogs.
Paddy
Paddy was a dog who came to the Animal Aid Society, was adopted for
a couple of years, then was returned through no fault of his own.
Sadly, he developed cancer in his later years and had to be put to
sleep.
Mingo & Me
This is a photo of Mingo and I, taken at his "forever home". The
empty plastic soda bottle in the foreground is one of his toys; for
some strange reason Mingo really enjoys playing with empty soda
bottles.

Mingo
Mingo is a wolf/German Shepard mix that came to AAS by some odd
circumstances. Wolf/dog mixes used to be called "hybrids" which
means a combination of two different species (a mule is a
donkey/horse hybrid). Lately, biologists have maintained that wolves
and dogs are the same species, so the preferred term is "wolfdog".
Mingo was eventually adopted by one of our volunteers who had
experience with wolfdogs. Mingo was a favorite around the shelter
due to his personality. He is very affectionate and playful, though
he could be pretty mischievous at times. While he shows a number of
wolf behaviors, for the most part he seems to think he is just
another dog. Like many of our other dogs, when a fire truck driving
through the neighborhood had its siren on, Mingo would "help" by
howling.

Candy
Candy was a stray, taken in by the Animal Aid Society where I
volunteer. Candy injured her leg while living at the shelter, so I
fostered her in my home while she healed up. Soon after returning
Candy to the shelter, she found a wonderful home and is living a
wonderful life with a fantastic family. Of course I'll write more on
this topic later, but for now I will simply state that there are
great dogs waiting to be adopted at a shelter near you. With few
exceptions, there is no need to buy puppies at the mall or any other
place; do a web search on the phrases "puppy mills" and "backyard
breeders" to educate yourself on the dog breeding business. If you
insist on a pure-bred dog, go to organizations such as akc.org to
learn about the breed and to find responsible breeders. Also
consider breed rescue organizations if you are looking for a
specific breed.
Spot
2000-2010
Spot was another dog from AAS that I fostered due to his medical
condition. He had severe arthritis from a bout of Lyme Disease that
eluded detection for several months. He needed to be in a home
environment, so I fostered him. Sadly, his condition worsened until
it was time to put him to sleep. I had him for his last 10 months on
Earth. I wish it could have been longer. Sooner or later I'll write
more on Spot, on my Dogs page. Rest in peace, buddy.
